❶ What is the appropriate clothing for Norikura Highlands?

Norikura Plateau is at an altitude of 1,200m to 1,800m, and if you go from Tatamidaira to Mt. Norikura, you'll be at an altitude of around 3,000m. It is said that the temperature drops by about 0.6°C for every 100m increase in altitude, so the temperature is quite different from the flatlands. In order to fully enjoy your stay, it is important to choose your clothing carefully in advance. In addition to trekking within the plateau, if you plan to go to the alpine zone to see the sunrise or climb Mt. Norikura, mountaineering equipment such as warm clothing and rain gear are essential.

To give you a rough idea of what to wear, we've listed the average temperatures by month. However, temperatures can vary significantly from the average depending on the year. Before you visit, be sure to double-check the weather forecast to understand the expected temperatures during your stay and prepare the right clothing.

6. It is a bear habitat

Norikura Plateau is blessed with a rich natural environment and is home to a variety of wild animals, including the Japanese serow, a special natural monument. It is also a habitat for Asiatic black bears, which are often spotted on the plateau. Asiatic black bears play an important role as large animals that support the rich forests, and local residents are working to improve the environment in order to coexist with bears.

That being said, you never know when you might encounter a bear. There are bear bells installed along the course in some places, but it's a good idea to carry one with you when you're walking so you can let others know you're there. If you do encounter a bear, try to remain calm.
