❶ The starry sky on the day of the new moon

No matter how suitable Norikura Kogen is for star gazing, when the moon is bright, only stars with strong light can be seen because they are drowned out by the light of the moon. If you are planning to visit Norikura for star gazing, the best time to visit is one week before and after the new moon. Deciding when to stay in Norikura according to the phases of the moon is one of the best travel choices.

Have you ever heard of the new moon wish? It has been believed since the beginning of time that if you make a wish on the new moon, it will come true, and the new moon has such magical power. Please look up at the starry sky of the new moon with your best wishes.

❷ The Milky Way visible to the naked eye

Generally speaking, the Milky Way may be associated with "Tanabata" (Star Festival). This is because the Milky Way is most easily visible at the height around Tanabata (from the end of the rainy season to around the Bon Festival). At Norikura Kogen, the Milky Way can be seen with the naked eye regardless of the season, as long as the conditions are right.

The Milky Way, especially in winter, is so delicate and faint that it is very rare to see it with the naked eye anywhere in the world. Children who grew up in Norikura Kogen, where the Milky Way can be seen as a matter of course, realize for the first time when they leave their hometown that the starry sky of Norikura is something special and not taken for granted.
