Rikura at Home VOL.4 "Mountain Climbing that can be completed 80% at home".

80% of mountain climbing can be completed at home

Hello everyone! I'm Azumi, your navigator.

The cherry blossoms have finally started to bloom in Norikura Highlands! The other day, when I went to visit the grave with my family, I saw the pink cherry blossoms from the car and my mood suddenly brightened, then tightened, and my heart was overflowing with emotion. On the way back, I told my family, "I'm going to walk home alone!" and leisurely admired the cherry blossoms in bloom in Norikura, saying things like, "You guys are so beautiful! Thank you!", feeling like I was a weirdo to anyone who saw me, and I played with the cherry blossoms until I was satisfied. The cherry blossoms that bloom in Norikura are called "Yamazakura" and are a deeper pink than regular cherry blossoms, and are incredibly beautiful.

It's finally time for new life to sprout in Norikura. When this time of year arrives, a wave of emotions hits. "I want to climb a mountain!!!" is all I can think of. I want to see the beautiful scenery that can't be captured in a photograph, and see the animals that live quietly in the mountains, such as the ptarmigan. Even though the weather is perfect for mountain climbing, the mountain bus to Mt. Norikura is currently suspended. I'm also refraining from climbing the mountains.

However, the day will come when we can climb mountains again! Believing that, I wondered if there was a way to experience the feeling of mountain climbing at home. Although I love mountains, I've never really studied mountain climbing properly. This made me realize that, so I decided to ask Mine-chan, a guide at Norikura Highlands, about it.

He then taught us something that would be extremely instructive for anyone who wants to start mountain climbing right now! Check out the video "Riding at Home vol.4" to see what happened!

Tip 1: Spread out a map and try desk climbing

[What is desk climbing?]

Desk climbing involves spreading out a map of the mountain you plan to climb or want to climb, and writing down what you notice at your desk to see what you can read from it.

Create your own hiking route while imagining in your mind the availability of facilities such as toilets, the condition of the hiking trail, the altitude, and the type of scenery you will be able to see.

By doing this desk climbing, you can also enjoy the difference between the actual mountain and the actual view.

Tabletop climbing from Igahara Sanso to Kengamine and Tatamidaira (10)

① There may not be a single water source?
② The summit is over 3,000m!
③ There seem to be two toilets.
④ Maybe we'll walk on a snowfield?
⑤ The whole journey will probably take about 5 hours (excluding breaks).
⑥ The difference in altitude from the mountain lodge (2,350m) to the summit (3,026m) is approximately 700m!!
⑦ There are three bus stops along the entire route!
⑧ The route alternates between hiking trails and bus routes.
9. There seems to be a steep slope from Igahara Sanso to Hotoku Reijin Shrine.
10. Will my knees hurt when descending from Kengamine?

Point 3: Mountain climbing training you can do at home

The physical maintenance required for mountain climbing is to train your body's sense of touch and the muscles in your lower body.

Here are some strength training exercises you can do at home!

  • Squats (easy repetitions)

Do this by stepping on a thick magazine or similar object with both heels.

  • Mopping exercises (with reasonable repetitions)

Use a rag or a slippery cloth to lean your body parallel to the floor as if you were polishing the flooring.

Please watch the video for both training sessions.

Mine-chan gave us a very detailed and fun lesson on how to prepare for mountain climbing at home! Her love for the mountains really comes through.

Although I am originally from Norikura Highlands, I spend most of my time in Tokyo, so my knowledge of mountain climbing has stagnated since elementary school. So now that I'm an adult, I want to learn more about mountains and hope for the day when I can climb mountains safely and enjoyably, while I indulge in my mountain climbing fantasies at home!

See you all on the mountain!
