NORIKURA TIMES (Winter Fun Edition 3)

Although this year is said to be a warm winter, the Norikura Plateau is still experiencing the piercing cold of sub-zero temperatures. However, it is this harsh environment that provides the unique enjoyment of Norikura Plateau. Here are some recommended things to do in this winter.

NORIKURA TIMES (Winter Fun Edition 3)

① Touji soba

Soba, a typical food of Norikura Highlands, is a delicacy nurtured by the unique climate of the Norikura Highlands. The extreme temperature difference allows the soba to firm up and have an exceptional flavor.
Among them, "Touji Soba" is a local dish that has been passed down in the area for a long time.
The "touji" in Touji Soba includes the meanings of "to throw in," "to soak," and "to warm." As the name suggests, Touji Soba is made in a unique way: a pot containing soup stock, dried greens, and other dried vegetables is heated over the fire, and the soba noodles are then placed in a bamboo basket, lightly boiled in the boiling soup, and then transferred to a warm bowl for eating.
It tastes even better in this cold, high altitude location.
After skiing, snowboarding, or snow hiking, it's nice to soak in a hot spring, but we also recommend enjoying some heart-warming Touji Soba.
Enjoy the cold winter weather at Norikura Plateau and spend some relaxing time here.

② Snow hike to Sanbontaki Falls

Zengoro Falls is famous as a winter frozen waterfall in Norikura Plateau, but Sanbontaki Falls is also highly recommended.
The sight of three waterfalls with different sources coming together in one place and frozen is a spectacular sight. You can also enjoy snow hiking on the trail through the forest leading to the falls.
However, unlike the green season, it is easy to get lost and fall into the river along the way, so if you are visiting for the first time, we recommend joining a guided tour.
Please be aware that there are some dangerous areas near the falls due to deep snow, freezing, and melting.
